Loved your article "Guilty of being born a Texan" in today's Houston Chronicle. I was born in Scotland where I met and married my Texan - I lived in Texas since 1976 and wouldn't live anywhere else. Yes it's hot and humid but the people more than make up for that - our son-in-law to be moved down here 18 months ago from New Jersey and loves it. He dreaded moving here to a Republican cattle raising state as he's a vegetarian, Yankee democrat and thought Texans would give him a hard time but, to his amazement, nobody is the slightest bit interested that he's a vegetarian, yankee democrat. Come on back home to Texas - there's nowhere else like it. B Long RE: Texan Hi Joe, Read your article today, Sunday. Only when you leave Texas and take a step back to hear fellow Texans talk on just about any subject do you realize how backward and out of step we Texans are as a region. This country's president has us neck and neck with Mississippi. I also experienced what you are experiencing in California. I, however, realized they were right. Your last paragraph...humm...you're sounding like a Republican to me, and I'm from Houston. If you're a raving liberal, come back, we need you. A Proud Liberal Democrat in Houston, A. S. RE: Houston Chronicle Article Like you I am a liberal resding in Texas. I have been here for 22 years, roughly half my life. When I travel now, I get the same response from my liberal acquaintences. What is funny is how many people assume I am a neoconservative and talk so freely as I am like them. Imagine the horror on their faces when I tell them I am one of the 40% of Texans who voted for Al Gore. Good luck, I often wish I lived amongst a more liberal minded people. I went to school in Madison Wisconsin and often just tell people I am from there now. You hit it on the money on how Texans are viewed. K.M. RE: Guilty(?) of Being Born Texan Joe, I just read your article in Houston's leading Socialist newspaper, the Houston Chronical (sometimes called the Comical). Such a sad tale, but at least you see your fellow Libs for what they are. There is still room for you to see the errors of your ways and return home like the Prodigal Son. We would open our arms and welcome you back. However, if that is not possible, then "Californie is the place you ought to be." I tried living on the Left Coast years ago. Alas, the is "No place like home." Like Dorothy, I got back home as soon as I could! I would like to pass along this cute letter from our Citizens that is making the rounds. Proud of being born a Texan, RE: Guilty(?) of Being Born Texan Joe, I want to tell you, pard, that you’d be no better off with your liberal views back here in your native state. Carol and I are Californians who’d heard about affordable waterfront property in the Padre Island neighborhood of Corpus Christi. We came, we saw, we bought in 2000. Jesu, hombre, we’ve been insulted, ignored and generally ridiculed for our left-of-center political views. There is no letup. Our associates here, not too many are friendly, tell us that California got exactly what it deserved with spike in electric rates. “Tell ‘em to turn off their hot tubs.” Around here they think Kenny Boy has been screwed by the liberal media. Sacramento is a great town. Go to Old Town and hit the bars. So you’ll get no sympathy from us. I’m sure that when your California pals get past your funny way of talking, you’ll find yourself in good company. -- G F |
