RE: California Nightmare in Texas

Joe

What an entertaining article! At 50 you have caused a first for me - writing to a columnist.... thank you! I'm laughing and crying at the same time as I am also the receiver of Texanitis. I have been dating a woman for five years. Her father is a director of the L A Times (among other papers). Her mother's job is to spend the money he makes. They are horrified that their daughter (40 something +) is even communicating with, much less dating a Texan. I have a successful business (for almost 30 years) and worked my way through college at night. I have a doctorate and have worked in almost 100 countries. I speak 3 languages and can "get by" in two more. However, they believe that being a "born and bred" Texan means your family tree doesn't fork and we all call our aunts "Mom" because of insufficient evidence - in their minds - to the contrary. I consider myself an independent and honestly vote that way but I have had enough of what you have called "elitist mentality". My money and any small influence I may have is now given to the Republican party even though I do not agree completely with the platform. This polarization is not good for the country but like you I'm sure ... Texans are stubborn. I will look for your articles in the future. We may not agree politically but the discussion would be fun

RE: (No Subject)

Most people living in California are transplants who have tried to create a socialist utopia. That's why the state is as screwed up as it is.Iam glad you moved.Just don't come back.

RE: OP ED PIECE IN HOUSTON CHRONICLE

Read your piece in the local paper. I'm glad that, after three years, you have realized what the liberal left is like: unreasonable, illogical, hateful, spiteful. This is not typical of the left only in California, it's typical of the liberal mindset, although I do realize that in California this is taken to an extreme. I knew that California liberals want to become Mexican citizens (the reason for that is beyond logic; just go across the border to Tijuana), and that they want revenge for what they perceive as Bush's "appointment" by the Court as president. Never mind that recount after recount by non-partison groups and media groups has shown that Bush won by some 587 votes. The Democrats have gotten so used to being in power that the shock of Bush's win has not worn off. To add insult to injury, the Republicans won back the House and the Senate for the first time in 40 years. And to top it all off, President Bush is from Texas, a state full of backward, cowboy rednecks, according to them. This is the base of their hatred. I hope your eyes have been opened and that you will look at the California liberals for what they are: elitists. And I hope that you start pointing out to these people the fallacies in their shallow thinking. I also hope that you would start thinking of the issues and the solutions that each party has and base your vote on that and not on Bush hatred. For people who say they are tolerant and inclusive, liberals are by far the most intolerant and discriminatory people I know. Unwilling to tolerate or even consider another point of view, their illogic rationality leads to only one conclusion: a mind full of hate for fellow Americans makes reasoning with them impossible. A fellow Texan, and proud of it.

RE: JOE MITCHELL'S "GUILTY OF BEING TEXAN"

Important that you read a "history book" as Texas did NOT steal the land from Mexico. The then ruller advertised American farmers could "have the land" if they'd come & cultivate the terrible, rocky, dry land no one in their land wanted. People across the south came, worked very hard & succeeded in raising crops, etc. The Mex. leader then noticed their "success" and decided he wanted the "land he'd given them" back. Wouldn't you fight for land that was YOURS? Of course, I've made this very simple for you. Read about "the truth" for yourself. Good luck in your writing but don't make statements until you have RESEARCHED first.

RE: JOE MITCHELL'S "GUILTY OF BEING TEXAN"

“Guilty of Being Born a Texan” What a great piece in the Sunday Outlook section. Wish I could say that. Born a Damn Yankee in Detroit where my Tarheel family had a short World War I assignment, I was able to live it down when my family moved back to the Old North State. Later, the War Dept sent me to Fort Worth to help engineer the building of B-24s in 1942. Ha, a Texan ever since by choice. Border guards at Niagara Falls even searched my trunk for guns since I was from Texas. Now writer Joe Mitchell, a Texan, lives and is defamed in California (of all places, Ug.) I lived and worked in that California mess for most of three years—apartments in Beverley Hills and South San Francisco, motels from San Diego to Santa Rosa. Most pleasant memories are the sunsets and mountains. My suggestion to Joe is to do as he is doing, consider the source, feel sorry for it, and move on. To me, these “guilty” charges could be considered a compliment. When one experiences the pitiful average intelligence levels around the country and yet they have learned to spell Texas and quote all the compliments, I think it’s great. I just hope they don’t learn to find Texas on the map. This whole matter is further evidence of a lower, less intelligent, class. For thousands of years the less capable, those who ‘can’t’, have always criticized the upper classes, those who ‘can’ and do. So, congratulations to Mr. Mitchell for pointing out this serious nation-wide intelligence problem. But nothing will be done about it because the less capable are in charge.
